Members and guests of SPSG celebrated MSC certification of Atlanto Scandian Herring with a lunch at the Silver Darlings restaurant in Aberdeen, on 19th March 2010.

Chairman John Goodlad spoke of his pride in developments over the past two years, during which time three SPSG pelagic fisheries have achieved certification as sustainable and well managed fisheries.  “When one recalls the lack of effective management and fisheries control only a few years ago, this is a remarkable achievement. SPSG now joins around only 80 fisheries around the world to achieve MSC certification,” he said.

“The Scottish pelagic industry is one of the most technologically advanced and efficient in the world and it is good to see these kind of fisheries being certified. It demonstrates that large, efficient and modern fisheries can also be sustainable.”

 
John Goodlad thanked the SPSG’s funders for the ongoing financial and practical support, especially Aberdeenshire Council, Shetland Islands Council, Scottish Fishermen’s Trust, Scottish Government, Marine Scotland Science, and Seafood Scotland.  He also thanked fellow Directors for their supporting roles during the MSC process, and Food Certification International for their professional approach as the certification body. 

Finally, he thanked Derek Duthie, who is leaving his role as Secretary of SPSG, for his considerable efforts on behalf of the group, and wished him the best in his new role with the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.
