FAQs on pelagic fishing

The SPFA has been protecting the interests of the Scottish pelagic fishing fleet for more than 75 years. It does this by actively promoting the sustainable fishing of pelagic stocks, maximising fishing opportunities for vessels, ensuring that members are allowed to participate equitably in international fisheries, and placing strong emphasis on safety, training and quality.

The Association represents 24 vessels in the Scottish pelagic fleet and has three branches located in Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Shetland.

It maintains that Scottish pelagic fishermen are amongst the most heavily regulated in Europe, working under the full spectrum of controls which include quota allocations, designated landing ports, restrictive licensing, closed areas and satellite monitoring. The Association works closely with Scottish and UK governments and the European Commission represent members' interests.
